Chuck Norris

Chuck Norris doesn't carry a backpack, the backpack carries Chuck Norris!

Chuck Norris really?

OK, so we all don’t usually create our own nicknames but I don’t see the resemblance. I also go by Derek or D for short and sometimes Creepy D.

I’m very new to Backpacking but I’d say I’m fairly advanced when it comes to the outdoors. I grew up living in the woods as a child barefoot and collecting animals bugs and fish and was always fascinated by everything outdoors. I’ve also had some previous training that involved not eating for two weeks and running around the woods with nothing but the clothes on my back and a knife in my hand. I never want to experience that again so that might be where the nickname comes from. I want to be prepared not only for the comfort but for any situation I might come across. I have been day hiking with my pup Nika for quite some time now shes been with me for just over 3 years now.

My pup and I scoping out the view.

I’m always wanting to learn more and getting into backpacking has shown that I don’t know as much as I need to.

Very similar to my fearless “leader” ha, more like overbearing, obsessed, organizer, heh that is a lot of “O”s, I’ve been into mountain-biking and always been an adrenaline junky myself. I however have never broken anything. Been in countless mountain-bike accidents, t-boned by a Chevy Tahoe on my R6. nose dive into a witches eye at Gorden’s Well on my Raptor, ran over by a man lift… that’s a long story I wont get into. This may be due to the fact that I am always prepared for the unexpected or I’m unbreakable! I’ll stick with the latter.

Backpacking is something I have always wanted to get into, but the cost and amount of items always seemed so intimidating. I will give credit to our… leader? hmmm, yes he did push the issue, he researched equipment, found a reasonable priced package to get started. However as we go along there are so many opinions on what to bring and I’m realizing that everything I want to bring I’m not capable of carrying. I’m hoping I can bring value as I learn what equipment is and is not necessary for me by providing facts and reasons why I think the way I do.
