Half Dome Cables Permit!

The Backpacking Journal is extremely excited to announce that we have received a permit from the lottery system to climb the infamous cables at Half Dome during our upcoming trip to Yosemite!

A huge focus of this trip is Half Dome and we have been impatiently waiting for the last 44 days to see if we were going to make it to the summit or not. To increase the odds of success we each individually entered the lottery with an application requesting 6 permits and it paid off.

Last night Chuck Norris  received an email “Dear Customer, Congratulations! You were successful in securing a permit to hike to the summit of Half Dome from the Cables on Half Dome Lottery.” While the rest of us got “Dear Customer, We are sorry to inform you that you were not successful in securing a permit to hike to the summit of Half Dome from the Cables on Half Dome Lottery.”

  1. Congrats….I got a rejection also….

    Can’t believe that 7 weekdays (not the busier weekends)…(300 permits/day time 7=2100 opportunities) weren’t available…

What about the groups that had multiple members get multiple permits??

    Doesn’t seem equitable….

    • Sorry to hear that Larry, are you planning on doing the daily lottery? It sounds like you are able to go durring the week so you would probably have a good chance of picking up one.

I have a feeling they will change the process again next year, the lottery was half smart, but there were for sure some pitfalls.

    • Permits for EVERYTHING! I have been planning our trip for about 4 months now, if you have any questions let me know I can point you in the right direction.

      • Exciting! Our route is what I would call both less than ideal and far from “normal”

Since we have never spent any time in Yosemite we are trying to cram in a bunch of the highlights.

Some of the trails we will try to hit will be Mist, Panoramic, and Yosemite Falls.

      • It wouldn’t let me reply below for some reason :/
But yeah, same here. Trying to get in all the goods stuff. I’m thinking hit the valley, and both sides, el capital and quarter dome, although the cables aren’t going to be up when I go. Should make for less crowds. Haven’t really sorted out where we’ll be camping yet or the exact order we’re doing this.
I’m sure no matter what, it’s going to be excellent.
